Glory-of-the-snow or Scilla luciliae is a bulbous perennial from western Turkey that flowers in the early spring. A Swiss botanist, Pierre Edmond Boissier, honoured his wife, Lucile. You will see these in the Crescent bed at the Ornamental Gardens. The flowers are blue-purple or pink. This perennial belongs to the Asparagaceae family. Once it flowers, it goes into dormancy until next spring. It is a low maintenance perennial that grows in zones 3-8 and requires full-sun to part-shade. Eranthis hyemalis or Winter Aconite belongs to the

Eranthis hyemalis or Winter Aconite belongs to the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. It is a tuberous perennial that pops out in the late winter, early spring. You will find these growing with the snowdrops near the Superintendent's house. Hardiness is zone 4-9 and they like full sun to partial sun. The bright yellow flowers are surrounded by a collar of leafy bracts. It is a low maintenance plant.

It was a beautiful day in the gardens last week with the rolling fog and sunshine. A bit chilly initially for all the volunteers, but it soon warmed up with all the pruning, weeding, and cleaning out the beds.

When you walk around the gardens near the Superint

When you walk around the gardens near the Superintendent's house, you will notice two varieties of witch hazel. The one that was featured on the gardens Facebook page a couple of weeks ago is the Chinese variety, Hamamelis mollis. This one is called Hamamelis x intermedia, 'Arnold Promise'. It is a hybrid between H.japonica and H.mollis. It is a large deciduous shrub that grows to 3.7m-4.6m (12'-15') in height, and in zones 5-8, and likes full-sun to partial-sun. In early spring, you can smell the sweet fragrance of the bright yellow flowers. Each flower consists of 4 ribbon-like, crinkled, strap-shaped petals and a reddish-green calyx. I'm back, and so is spring. A lot of tiny green leaves are starting to poke through the ground. This is Galanthus nivalis or snowdrop. One of the first flowers to pop up in the gardens. This dainty perennial is slightly fragrant and has bell-shaped white flowers. The flowers have 3 white outer tepals and 3 smaller inner ones. The plant, which is a bulb, grows to 25cm and spreads 15cm. Easily grown in full sun to partial shade. Photos 📷 taken March, 2025

Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' is an ornamental pe

Pyrus calleryana 'Chanticleer' is an ornamental pear that is also known as Bradford pear. You will find this beautiful dense cultivar deciduous tree close to the Butterfly garden and on some medians throughout Summerland. This tree is native to China and Vietnam and belongs to the Rosaceae family. It can grow to a height of 5-8m (16-25ft) and produce outstanding scented white flowers. The dark glossy leaves turn into beautiful shades of red, yellow, purple, bronze, and orange in the fall. The fruit is small and hard and almost woody. Not edible to humans, but the birds love them and invariably help spread the seeds. Photos 📷 taken Nov, 2025

Come and take a walk through the gardens during the winter. It has a different quiet feel to the place. The coral snowberries are just beautiful and add a lovely colour to the garden. The roses are still in bloom near the house, especially the yellow ones. The gardens are open all winter. If there is a lot of snow on the ground, snowshoe around.

I thought that as not much happens in the gardens over the winter, I would post a few fall photos over the next few months.
Cotinus coggygria 'Ancot' is also known as Golden Spirit Smoke Tree cultivar that is grown for its unusual golden foliage. It is native from southern Europe to central China. This upright deciduous multi-stemmed shrub can grow to a height of 240 cm (8'). Its foliage of almost circular leaves turns into beautiful shades of coral pink, red, and orange in the fall. The smoketree belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. Bloom time for this shrub is May-July and it likes full-sun to part-shade. It is easy to grow in average soils, but it requires excellent drainage. It's that time of the year to wish all of you and our followers, members, and those who kindly donate to the Friends of Summerland Ornamental Gardens a Merry Christmas. A big thank you to all the volunteers who kindly donated their time to the garden, whether it was weeding, planting, sweeping the pathways, plant sales, and being committee and board members, it was all appreciated. A big thank you also to the two full-time gardeners who put in a lot of time and love into the garden for all of us to enjoy.
