Snowdrops are one of the first flowers to herald the arrival of spring. Alas, not this time. They are a bulbous perennial in the Amaryllidaceae family. The normal pattern of the petals is a single green mark at the open end of the inner petals. Plant the bulbs in the fall in zones 3-7. They like loose, well-drained soil. Photos đź“· Feb, 2026

This was taken a couple of weeks ago when there was fresh snow on the local mountains and blue skies. When the sun peaks out again, take a walk by the Fairy Garden. The fairies have gone to warmer places, but some of their houses are still there to admire. Have a seat on one of the benches and look out over the orchards at the research centre and lake. Just sit and absorb.

It is that time of the year to celebrate with frie It is that time of the year to celebrate with friends, family, and loved ones. Another year is ending, and the Ornamental Gardens would not be where we are today without our two full-time gardeners, our volunteers, our various team leaders, committees, and board members. Last but not least, a big thank you to all that have donated money to keep our gardens going.

On your way there, take a look at all the varieties of apples still on the branches at the Summerland Research and Development Centre. The research centre is known for the development of a variety of apples over the years. I wonder if these are the "tests". Makes for a beautiful photo against the grey skies. Others are just plastered to them, vibrating in the wind. They are quite entertaining to watch. Just make sure they are not caught under your car as you drive past.

Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae or daisy family. Dahlias belong to the Asteraceae or daisy family. They are native to Mexico and Central America and are a tuberous, herbaceous perennial. A great addition to your garden as there are 49 species. Even though it is a perennial that grows in our Ornamental Gardens, the tubers are tender and do not do well in cold soil. So hardiness is zone 8-11. The tubers need to be dug up and stored over the winter. A lot of work you might think, but really not. Dahlias need lots of sunlight, with moist, well draining soil. Bloom time is summer to early fall.
