Euonymus alatus or Burning Bush belongs to the Celastraceae family. It is native to China, Korea, and Japan. This shrub grows to 6m (20') tall and loves full sun to part shade. Many of the cultivars are bred to be smaller It is the most showy in the fall when the elliptical leaves turn a brilliant red colour, hence the name "burning bush". The fruit is red and enclosed in a capsule. Burning Bush is drought tolerant once established and grows in zones 3-9. Considered invasive in some parts of Eastern USA, it is not here. Aster novi-belgii is sometimes called New York Aster or Michaelmas Daisy. Michaelmas, because it blooms around September 29th, which is St.Michael's Day. This aster, as you guessed right, belongs to the Asteraceae family. These perennials provide a beautiful colour in the fall and come in a variety of purple shades. It is a sturdy clump forming perennial with lance shaped leaves and can grow to a height of 90-120cm (3'-4'), making it great for borders in gardens.They thrive in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Happy Dia De Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, as it is celebrated in Mexico. As this is being posted after Halloween, I couldn't say Happy Halloween. You will understand this statement after you see the third image.
Coleus argentatus or Silver spurflower belongs in the mint family, Lamiaceae. If you walk through the gardens at this time of the year, they are still blooming by the side of the Superintendents house. The hairs on the leaves give it an overall sage green to silvery colour. The flowers small tubular bluish-white, are borne on terminal racemes up to 30cm (12") long. It is a plant that prefers partial shade and is reasonably drought-resistant in good soil. Even though it is an evergreen perennial subshrub, it is treated as an annual in frost prone climates. Photos October 2024

It is a perennial that is enjoyed for its spicy fragrance, uniquely coloured flowers, and finely textured foliage. The flower belongs to the mint family, Lamiaceae. This western native attracts hummingbirds to the nectar-rich flowers for months. Bloom time is early summer to fall and is drought tolerant. Ericameria nauseosa or Rabbitbrush or Chamisa belongs to the Asteraceae family. You may have seen these beautiful fragrant shrubs on your walks in the garden or around the Okanagan or even as far south as New Mexico. A perennial shrub that grows to a height of 1-3m (3'-10'). The leaves are greenish-gray and have a soft velvet covering. The shrub blooms from August to October and produces golden-yellow flowers. Native Americans used rabbitbrush as a yellow dye, as well as to make medicinal tea and chewing gum. It does well in arid regions, so drought and heat tolerant once established. These beautiful plants grow 60-90cm (2'-3') in height and do best in partial shade to full-shade. Hardiness is zone 4-9. Bloom time is usually around late August, with daisy like yellow flowers. It is a deciduous tree that grows to about 9-12m ( 30"-40') and has beautiful seed pods that are green and turn brown in the fall. The pods are a papery three part bladder-like pod that contain several seeds. It has yellow flowers that appear in clusters in the summer. The tree is low maintenance, drought tolerant and likes full sun. Between the leaves, flowers, and pods, it is very showy and makes a great shade tree. Hardiness is zone 6-9. Here, we have two varieties of Gaillardia, Arizona Apricot, and Mesa Red. Again, another plant in the Asteraceae family and native to North and South America. The plant was named after Maître Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th-century French magistrate who also happened to be a botanist. Another common name for this plant is Blanket flower. It is an easy perennial to grow, that has richly coloured flowers that are unfortunately short-lived. Deadheading the spent flowers keeps them blooming all summer.
