The 25th Anniversary of Friends of the Gardens
Regardless of the weather, “We gardeners are healthy, joyous, natural creatures. We are practical, patient, optimistic. We declare our optimism every year, every season, with every act of planting.” (Carol Deppe, The Resilient Gardener)
The Friends of the Gardens are a hearty lot! Carol Deppe describes us well. Whether gardening or partying, we know we have to be patient and flexible.
That was certainly the case for the Friends of the Gardens 25th anniversary celebration on May 29th, 2016. Organizers were optimistic for a beautiful sunshiny day; the tables and chairs were set amongst the pines. All the plans were in place, but the weather did not cooperate. Fortunately actors from the Singers and Players group and antique cars driven by the Apple Valley Cruisers weathered the rain and created a nostalgic backdrop for visitors as they arrived, and provided footage for the video being created for the Gardens Centennial. In the end, it all worked out!
Guests squeezed into the big room of the Superintendent’s House with little room to spare! The atmosphere was cozy and appreciative. Music was provided by the Musaic Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Tracy Stuchbery and the children’s choir, The Garden Party Players, directed by Linnea Good. Scott Austin spoke about the importance of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens to the community. Long time members, Brian Stretch, Lorin Godfrey, Sigrid and Gus Boersma, Irene Meheriuk, Donna Lane, Marlene Hikichi, Margaret King and Dorothy Fisher, were recognized for their years of dedication. The afternoon ended with cake and tea.
It was a fitting recognition of an organization that continues to play an instrumental role in maintaining and enhancing the Summerland Ornamental Gardens.
