Celebrating the Summerland Ornamental Gardens
“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer celebration; one of those summer events which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going, one of those summer times which in a fortunate combination of delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”

2016 marked the 100th birthday of the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. The Friends of the Gardens Board and many dedicated volunteers hosted a memorable “100 Seasons in the Sun“ celebration. The July 16-17 weekend was a grand success with two thousand people attending.
There was something for everyone. The Gardens were in fine form and guests enjoyed the guided walking tours. The Artisan Village had a diverse offering of arts and crafts. Visitors were able to view the newly erected “Nature’s Bounty” mural created by the Summerland Potters Guild and the new interpretative sign by the Superintendent’s House. The environmental and historical displays were informative and appreciated. The Superintendent’s House was a popular place with tours, the botanical art display and silent auction. The kids’ zone was busy with face painting, crafts, heritage games, and the transplanting of sunflowers in a potting shed. The music was diverse and wonderful. And, when people wanted a break, they sought out food and enjoyed a picnic lunch amongst the trees and flowers, just like in the days of the annual farm picnics.
…
An event of this magnitude takes many hours of planning. On behalf of the Friends of the Gardens Board and the Centennial Committee, we tip our hats to 90-plus volunteers who stepped up to make the weekend so special. Funding was provided by a generous Heritage Canada grant, as well as other financial contributions from local businesses, organizations and individuals. The local quilt guild and rug hookers’ guild created and raffled off centennial pieces; other artist groups donated items for the silent auction. And to all who came and celebrated with us, thank you for your support!
Sher Morgan from Victoria brought her dad, Howard Morgan, age 96, back to Summerland for the celebration. Sher summed it up well in her thank you note: “We will always remember Dad’s stories of the Farm; stories brought to life again on a summer day in 2016 as a piper strolled the length of the grand lawn, pipes wailing, echoed magically by the whistle of the train – amazing!” The celebration, Sher said, “was all we hoped to experience and much, much more!”
